Atomic Structure Class 11 Chemistry Handwritten Notes

Atomic Structure Class 11 Chemistry Handwritten Notes

Atomic theory was first originated as a philosophical concept in ancient Greece. The word 'atom comes from the ancient Greek word 'atmos' means 'indivisible'. In the 15th century Democritus proposed that matter consists of indestructible, indivisible units called atoms. Later on, John Dalton, in the beginning of the 18th century, put forward the atomic theory which is called as the beginning of scientific atomic theory.

At that time atoms were believed to be smallest unit of matter. In 1897, J. J. Thomson discovered the electron and put forward the Thomson Atomic Model. According to Thomson Model, atoms are uniform spheres of positively charged matter in which electrons are embedded. This model was no longer valid when Ernest Rutherford, in 1911, proposed Rutherford Atomic Model based on experimental fact.

What we are going to study
In this chapter we are going to study about Rutherford atomic model, postulates of Bohr's atomic model and its application, spectrum of hydrogen atom, defects of Bohr's theory, elementary idea of quantum mechanical model and heisenberg's uncertainty principle.

  Key Objectives
When you have finished studying this unit, you should able to:

  • describe the nuclear model of atoms: Rutherford atomic model and Bohr atomic model and their limitations.
  • explain the spectrum of hydrogen atom according to Bohr.
  • understand the elementary idea of quantum mechanical model: de-Broglie equation, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, probability concept, quintum numbers.
  • know the concept of orbitals and shape of's and p orbitals.
  • describe Aufbau principle, Pauli's exclusion principle and Hund's rule.
  • write electronic configuration of atoms and ions for the first 30 elements.
